LG Launches AI-DOL - a Fake K-POP Group Built to Sell a Washing Machine

LG Electronics entered the idol business, temporarily, by launching a five-member group named AI-DOL.

The company revealed AI-DOL on Aug. 28 after running teaser videos and digital ads across Seoul. Despite the “AI” in the name, the members are not virtual characters. AI-DOL features five real people—Lee Yeon, Moa, Seonghyeon, Heejae, and Sua—brought together to campaign for LG’s AI WashCombo washer-dryer.

The group received a standard K-POP debut rollout, complete with member profiles, concept photos, teasers, choreography, social media promos, and an original song.

AI-DOL released “I WASH” on Instagram on Aug. 30, hitting No. 1 on the platform’s trending audio chart. The dance video reached No. 4 on Reels, drawing participation from singer Choi Yena, comedian Lee Sun-min, and choreographer Hyojin Choi.

Behind the familiar rollout lies an unusual setup. Each of the five members represents a specific feature of the AI WashCombo, including all-in-one capacity, AI time sensing, AI washing and drying, flat design, and MiniWash.

LG stated it created AI-DOL to pitch the product to younger consumers in a more engaging way.

The group will run digital activities until the end of September, operating more as a monthlong ad campaign than a standard K-POP debut.
